FAQ
Why did TurboTax drop its deductible?
Intuit discontinued ItsDeductible as a product decision, not because charitable deductions changed, with the tool officially shutting down on October 21, 2025.
The decision came from inside TurboTax's business strategy team. Intuit's stated reason was product simplification: they chose to stop maintaining ItsDeductible as a standalone web tool and redirect those resources toward their core TurboTax filing experience. The IRS rules governing charitable contribution deductions were not changed, and donations of non-cash property remain fully deductible for taxpayers who itemize.
The practical effect is straightforward. After October 21, 2025, you can no longer log into ItsDeductible to look up estimated values for donated household goods or track contributions across the year. You will need to record those donations separately, using a spreadsheet or another tracking method, and enter the values manually when you file. For donated items valued under $500 in total, a written receipt from the charity is typically sufficient. For single items or groups of similar items where the claimed deduction exceeds $500, IRS recordkeeping rules apply, and for contributions over $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified charitable donation appraisal prepared by a credentialed appraiser.
If your non-cash donations cross that $5,000 threshold, the loss of ItsDeductible matters most. A self-reported estimate from a discontinued tool would not satisfy IRS substantiation requirements anyway. See our page on how to determine the value of donated items and what triggers an IRS audit on charitable donations for more detail on protecting your deduction properly.
