VEHICLE DONATIONS
A Trade-In Offer Isn't Fair Market Value
A car, boat, or RV sitting unused often costs money in insurance, storage, and depreciation every month it isn't sold. Donating the vehicle instead of trading it in or selling it privately lets an owner support a cause while claiming a deduction based on the vehicle's fair market value rather than a lowball trade-in offer.
Vehicle donations follow special substantiation rules once the claimed value exceeds $5,000: a qualified appraisal is required, and for classic, exotic, or highly customized vehicles, a simple pricing-guide lookup usually isn't enough to support the value.
RVs and trailers carry their own fair market value considerations, from age and mileage to condition and market comparables. Our guide to RV and trailer appraisal for charitable donation covers what Form 8283 requires for larger donated vehicles.

Vehicle Donations Usually Transfer Directly to a Charity
Legacy Donation Appraisers appraises vehicles donated directly to nonprofits and through dedicated vehicle donation programs, as well as vehicles transferred through an estate.
Direct Gift to a Nonprofit
The vehicle transfers straight to the charity's title, with the appraisal establishing fair market value as of the donation date.
Vehicle Donation Programs
Many charities use a dedicated donation program to process the transfer and eventual sale; the appraisal still values the vehicle itself, not the program's resale price.
Estate & Trust Transfers
Classic cars, RVs, and boats are sometimes donated as part of settling an estate rather than sold through a dealer or auction.

VEHICLE DONATION QUESTIONS
Vehicle Donors' Most Common Questions
Do I need a qualified appraisal to donate a vehicle?
When the fair market value of a donated vehicle exceeds $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified appraisal prepared in accordance with USPAP. For donations under $5,000, a formal appraisal isn't required, but you still need to document the vehicle's fair market value.
Are classic or collector vehicles appraised differently than standard cars?
Yes. Standard vehicles are valued from comparable sales and pricing guides adjusted for condition and mileage. Classic, exotic, and collector vehicles require additional analysis of matching numbers, originality, restoration quality, and recent auction results.
How are boats and RVs valued compared to cars?
Boats, RVs, and trailers have their own specialized markets and seasonal demand patterns. For marine vessels, we may also reference survey reports and engine hour documentation alongside comparable sales.
What if my vehicle has significant modifications or damage?
Modifications and damage both affect fair market value and need to be documented with photographs and, where relevant, repair or upgrade records. We factor these into the comparable sales analysis rather than using a stock valuation guide figure.
How much does a vehicle donation appraisal cost?
Fees are quoted as a fixed fee before any work begins, never hourly. Scope depends on the vehicle type, its rarity or complexity, and how complete your documentation is.
How long does a vehicle donation appraisal take?
Turnaround depends on the vehicle type and how much comparable sales research is needed. Tell us your deadline and we'll confirm up front whether we can meet it; expedited service is available.
